Sell a car for parts in Chicago

Selling a car for parts in Chicago means one of two things. You pull the good parts and sell them one by one, or you sell the whole car to a buyer who counts what's still good on it. Junk Cars Buyers High Offer does the second: we're junk car buyers in Chicago who buy the complete car, tow it free and pay you at pickup.

Is my car worth more for parts?

Your car is worth more for parts when something valuable on it still works, such as a good engine or transmission, straight body panels or a clean interior, while the car as a whole isn’t worth fixing. If the parts are worn out or already gone, the car is worth its weight in metal and not much more.

That’s the question every buyer is quietly answering when they price your car. A 20-year-old sedan with a seized engine but a spotless interior and four good doors isn’t the same car to a buyer as the same model with the doors rusted through. Both are junk. One still has parts people will pay for.

So the useful question isn’t “is it junk?” It’s “what on this car could someone sell?” Be honest with yourself about that, then be honest with every buyer you ask. A buyer can only count the parts you tell them about.

Parting it out yourself vs selling it whole

You’ll see forum threads that say the most money comes from pulling the car apart and selling it piece by piece. Sometimes that’s true. Here’s what it takes in Chicago before you try:

Parting it out yourself Selling it whole to a buyer
Space A garage or driveway for weeks or months None after pickup day
Tools and know-how Enough to pull an engine or a door safely None
Selling Listing each part, answering messages, meeting strangers One call
What’s left at the end A stripped shell you still have to get rid of Nothing
Money Possibly more in total, paid in dribs and drabs One amount, paid at pickup

The space problem is bigger here than in most places. The Chicago City Clerk lists junk vehicles among the vehicles that may not park on any residential or business street. A half-dismantled car on the curb in front of a two-flat is exactly that. If you don’t have a garage or a driveway, parting it out isn’t really on the table.

And the shell at the end still needs a tow. Parting out doesn’t remove the junk car sale. It moves it to later, for a car that’s now worth less.

What makes a parts car worth more to a buyer

Buyers who value parts care about three things, in roughly this order.

Is it complete? A car with its engine, transmission, catalytic converter, wheels and battery in place is worth more than the same car with any of those pulled. Every missing piece is a part the buyer can’t sell.

What works? “Engine ran until last month” is worth saying. So is “transmission slips but the engine’s fine” or “front end smashed, rear untouched”. Damage in one place often means good parts in another.

What’s it likely to be worth whole? Popular models have more demand for used parts, simply because there are more of them on the road needing repairs. You can’t change what you own, but you can say it clearly: year, make, model, and the engine if you know it.

Don’t strip it before you sell

It’s tempting to pull the battery or sell the wheels first and then junk what’s left. Do the maths before you do.

The offer you get is for the car you describe. If you sell the good tyres for a small sum and then tell a buyer the car’s on its rims, their number drops, and it can drop by more than the tyres fetched, because the car is now harder to move and less complete. If you don’t mention it and the driver finds the car missing parts, the number you were quoted no longer fits the car.

Keep it complete until it’s sold. If you want to keep something (a child seat, a set of roof bars, anything that’s yours rather than the car’s), take it out and say so when you ask for the offer.

How we buy a car for parts

We’re junk car buyers in Chicago who buy the whole car, so parts value counts toward your offer without you lifting a wrench.

  1. Fill in the year, make, model and title status, followed by your name, phone and the car’s location.
  2. Tell us what works and what doesn’t when we call. That’s where parts value gets counted.
  3. We call within 15 minutes with our offer.
  4. We tow it for free, often the same day, and you’re paid at pickup.

Not sure whether your car is a parts car or a scrap car? That’s the first thing who pays the most for junk cars sorts out, and it’s worth reading before you take anyone’s first number.

Quick answers

Do you buy a car that's already missing parts?

Yes. We buy scrap cars too, stripped ones included. Tell us what's gone so the offer matches the car the driver finds.

Do I need the title to sell a parts car?

It's the simplest route. No title? We can still help. Say which papers you do have: a bill of sale, the registration, an insurance card. Illinois law, not us, decides which of those can stand in for a title on a scrap sale, and we'll tell you where you stand when we call.

Can the car sit on the street while I decide?

The Chicago City Clerk lists junk vehicles among the vehicles that may not park on any residential or business street, so a car that's been stripped or won't move is better kept in a garage, driveway or yard until it's collected.
